The Joint Mongolian-Russian-American Archaeological Expeditions (JMRAAE) were initiated in 1995 to explore the Pleistocene prehistory of greater Mongolia and adjacent territories. In 2000, JMRAAE became formally linked with UCLA’s Tibet Paleolithic Project (http://paleo.sscnet.ucla.edu), creating a coordinated interdisciplinary team dedicated to understanding the earliest peopling of high, arid Central and Inner Asia. Data derived from archaeology, geology and geochronology, paleoecology, paleogeography and related disciplines collectively describe patterns of human behavior and human-environmental interactions in the region extending back hundreds of thousands of years.
The Joint Mongolian-Russian-American Archaeological Expeditions and the Tibet Paleolithic Project currently undertake field studies in China, Mongolia, Russia, and Tibet focusing on reconnaissance for and survey of Paleolithic localities and excavation of deeply stratified Pleistocene sites.
